How Much Does Bulk SMS Cost in 2026? Rates by Country
SMS pricing looks simple on the surface but depends on routing, volume and destination. Here is exactly how it works and what you should pay.
Bulk SMS looks like the cheapest channel on paper — and it usually is. But the price per message you are quoted depends on three things: where the message is going, how many you send a month, and who is routing it. This guide breaks down how SMS pricing is calculated so you can compare quotes honestly.
How SMS pricing is calculated
Every SMS you send travels through your messaging provider to a destination carrier. The provider charges you per message page (160 characters of plain GSM text, or 70 Unicode characters), and the destination country sets most of the cost. That is why a message to a local number can cost pennies while the same message to another continent costs ten times more.
- Destination — the single biggest factor. Domestic messages are cheapest because your provider already holds local routes.
- Volume — most platforms price in bands. Send under 1,000 messages a month and you pay the starter rate; cross 10,000 and a lower per-SMS rate applies automatically.
- Message length — over 160 characters splits into multiple pages and each page is billed. An emoji or Unicode character switches you to the 70-character-per-page rate.
- Sender ID and priority — branded sender IDs and priority/OTP routing can carry a small surcharge.
Typical SMS rates by destination
As a rough benchmark for 2026, on Aion Messaging your per-SMS page rate in the smallest volume band looks like:
- Ghana (+233) — from GHS 0.08 per page (GHS 0.05 at 10,000+ a month).
- Nigeria (+234) — from NGN 11.70 per page (NGN 7.60 at 10,000+ a month).
- South Africa (+27) — from ZAR 0.16 per page (ZAR 0.11 at 10,000+ a month).
- Rest of Africa — from USD 0.008 per page.
- International — from USD 0.06 per page, rising with destination cost.

How to get a lower SMS rate
You do not need to call sales or switch providers to get volume pricing. Look for platforms with automatic volume bands: the same account, the same API, and a lower per-SMS price as your monthly count climbs. Prepaid wallets also help you cap spend — you only send what your balance covers.
Watch out for hidden costs
- Two-way and MO messages — replies (mobile-originated) are billed separately if you use short codes or keywords.
- Number scrubbing — delivering to invalid or ported numbers still costs a message if your provider counts accepted messages.
- Minimum top-ups — some providers force large prepaid purchases to unlock low rates. Prefer transparent pay-as-you-go billing.
Budget a campaign in three steps
- Estimate recipients and SMS pages (length ÷ 160).
- Multiply by your volume-band rate for the destination.
- Add 10–15% for invalid numbers and retries.
