SMS Marketing in 2026: Tips That Actually Get Replies
Open rates are irrelevant when the goal is a reply or a purchase. These are the SMS marketing habits that move real numbers.
SMS has the highest open rates of any channel, but that only matters if the message earns a reply, a click or a sale. Here are the tactics that separate high-performing SMS programs from spam that gets blocked.
1. Consent first, always
Only message people who opted in, and record when and how they opted in. Offer a clear opt-out in every message (reply STOP or an unsubscribe link). Carriers increasingly filter no-consent traffic, so a clean list is also a delivery strategy.
2. Segment beyond "everyone"
Send different messages to new vs returning customers, and by behavior: abandoned cart, last purchase date, service renewal. A 100-recipient segment that converts beats a 10,000-recipient blast that gets blocked.
3. Write for the lock screen
You have roughly 90 characters before your message truncates on many phones. Front-load the offer and the action. Use your branded sender ID so recipients recognise you instantly.
4. Time it to local daylight
Send during business hours in the recipient's timezone — 10am–4pm local time converts best for most markets. Never schedule alerts outside working hours unless they are genuinely urgent.
5. Link, measure, A/B test
Every campaign needs one measurable next step. Use a short link so you can count clicks, and run A/B tests on the offer and the call-to-action. Report on reply rate, click-through and conversions — not just "sent" counts.
6. Respect frequency
Too many messages is the fastest way to lose consent and tank your sender reputation. Cap volume per contact per week, and pause marketing during OTP or transactional bursts.
Our marketing tools include templates, a link shortener, drip automation and A/B tests to run all of this from one dashboard.
